Chapter 4

PART 4

Blake stood at the head of the executive table when Serena entered.

Celeste sat to his right. Nora Bell took the chair opposite him. Directors Marcus Hale and Diane Porter sat along the far side with copies of the Harbor North summary closed in front of them.

Julian remained near the wall.

Serena did not take the empty seat.

She placed the three folders on the table.

Then she opened the hotel envelope and aligned the two boarding-pass pieces under the overhead light.

The confirmation number became readable.

H9M6K3.

Blake looked at the torn paper, and for the first time since the airport, Serena saw fear without anger covering it.

Nora began.

"Mr. Holt has characterized the emergency hold as a marital reaction. Serena, explain your basis."

Serena pointed to the first line of the timeline.

"My stored signature image was downloaded at 2:26 p.m. The Harbor North consent was created at 3:41. Executive travel checked me in at 4:11. I entered the airport after six."

Marcus Hale leaned forward.

"Who initiated check-in?"

Julian answered.

"Blake Holt's credentials."

Blake folded his arms.

"Executive travel routinely checks in family members."

Serena looked at him.

"Did I ask you to check me in?"

"You had the itinerary."

"That was not my question."

His jaw moved.

"No."

"Did I approve the Harbor North transfer?"

"You were informed about the acquisition."

"Did I approve the transfer?"

"You did not object."

Serena touched the torn pass.

"Did I approve it?"

Blake looked toward the directors.

"No."

The word changed the room.

Not because anyone had lacked suspicion.

Because Blake had finally separated knowledge from consent in his own voice.

Serena opened the digital certificate.

"Did you instruct your office to obtain this signature image?"

"It was already on file."

"Did you instruct them to obtain it?"

"Yes."

Celeste turned toward him.

"You told me Serena signed yesterday."

Blake ignored her.

Nora did not.

"Ms. Wynn, were you shown this certificate?"

"Only the signature page. Blake said the board had approved everything."

Blake's voice sharpened.

"Celeste, this does not concern you."

She stared at him.

"You brought me to the airport because you said my contract began after the closing."

Serena felt no satisfaction.

Celeste had participated in the humiliation. She had stood behind Blake while he tore the pass. But now she was learning that even her promised future depended on a lie told with Serena's name.

Nora asked Blake, "Was Ms. Wynn's employment agreement included in the acquisition budget?"

He said nothing.

Diane Porter opened a side file.

"There is a three-year chief brand officer commitment with a signing bonus from the Harbor integration account. It was not presented to the board."

Celeste's face lost color.

"You said it was approved."

Blake placed both hands on the table.

"Harbor North required speed. Serena had become impossible to involve in every operational decision."

Serena opened the memorandum describing her as disengaged.

"You wrote this three weeks before tonight."

"Because it was true."

"You told lenders my trust demonstrated confidence. You told directors my silence demonstrated disengagement. Which version was true?"

He looked at her with open hostility.

"The company comes before your feelings."

"Consent is not a feeling."

The sentence stopped him.

Serena lifted the pass.

"You needed this number in the packet because the board requested direct confirmation from me. You created the appearance that I was traveling to provide it. Then you removed me from the trip after the record had served you."

Blake's control broke.

"I tore a ticket during an argument. Do not turn that into fraud."

"The check-in came first. The consent came first. The cancellation came two minutes after you left. The tear did not create the plan. It exposed the sequence."

Nora looked at Julian.

"Is the consent valid?"

"No."

"Can Harbor North close without it?"

"Not under the trust-backed facility."

"Did Blake have authority to use the signature image?"

"No."

Marcus Hale turned toward Blake.

"You built a sixty-eight-million-dollar transfer on a spouse whose approval you did not have."

"I built this company," Blake snapped.

Nora's voice remained level.

"You did not build an exemption from governance."

Celeste opened her handbag and removed a folded contract.

"Did Serena's guarantee fund this?"

Blake stared at her.

"Put that away."

Celeste placed the contract beside the torn boarding pass.

The promised bonus appeared on the first page.

Diane read it.

"Harbor integration account."

Celeste laughed once, without humor.

"You used your wife's backing to pay me for replacing her."

Blake turned on Serena.

"This is what you wanted. A public spectacle."

Serena looked around the closed room.

No reporters. No cameras. No cheering witnesses.

Only the people responsible for deciding whether his authority still meant anything.

"No," she said. "I wanted the record to arrive before your explanation."

Nora folded her hands.

"Serena, what action are you requesting?"

Blake's eyes fixed on her.

There was the power he still believed she wanted.

A chance to destroy him in one sentence.

Serena thought of the employees whose paychecks depended on Holt Meridian. The clinics waiting for Harbor North deliveries. The drivers and warehouse crews who had never seen Blake tear a boarding pass and should not lose their work because he treated consent as a nuisance.

"Freeze Harbor North," she said. "Suspend every authority connected to my trust. Preserve company operations. Audit every consent bearing my name."

Nora waited.

"And Mr. Holt?"

Serena slid the pass toward the center of the table.

"He should answer to the same documents he expected everyone else to trust."

Nora called for a vote.

Blake looked from one director to the next.

No one met him with loyalty.

The board had not yet announced the consequence.

May you like

But the first power he lost was already gone.

He no longer controlled what the room believed.
