Chapter 2

PART 2
Daniel did not arrest Holt.
He did something the officer feared more.
He made the accusation impossible to bury.
He copied the recording to two encrypted drives. One went to Judge Miriam Cole, who supervised his task force. The other went to an inspector outside Daniel's command.
Only then did he tell Holt to step away from Mateo.
Holt obeyed, but his eyes kept moving toward the elevator.
Daniel noticed he was waiting for someone.
"Who told you Lucia was in the building tonight?"
"She works here."
"Not after ten. Not without a special archive request."
"I don't manage records."
"But you knew she needed to keep her mouth shut."
Holt looked at the black SUV.
"That recording is incomplete."
"Then you should be eager for the rest."
A night supervisor named Tessa Monroe arrived from the elevator with two courthouse security staff. Daniel did not allow them to take Mateo out of sight. He asked Tessa to remain with the boy beside the SUV while he questioned Holt five feet away.
Daniel had spent years calling distance protection. Now Mateo stood in the cold garage because Lucia had carried the danger alone.
"Mom said not to let them put me upstairs," Mateo said.
Daniel turned.
"Why?"
"Because upstairs belongs to whoever changed the list."
Holt's jaw tightened.
Daniel heard it before he understood it.
A service elevator moving behind closed doors.
Holt looked toward the sound.
Daniel's phone rang.
Deputy Director Nolan Shaw.
Shaw had run witness transfers beneath Daniel for six years. He knew about Lucia and Mateo and had taught Daniel to call secrecy discipline rather than fear.
Daniel answered on speaker.
"Where are you?" Shaw asked.
"B2."
A pause.
"With the boy?"
Mateo heard it.
So did Holt.
Daniel's voice cooled.
"Why would you ask that before asking about Lucia?"
Shaw recovered quickly. "Because courthouse police reported a juvenile breach. Lucia accessed sealed transfer files without authorization. We believe she panicked and left the building."
"Her scheduled message says otherwise."
"Daniel, this is not a family matter."
Mateo looked at his father.
The sentence had been designed for Daniel. He had used versions of it for years—words that made abandonment sound professional.
"It became a family matter when one of your officers put his hand on my son," Daniel said.
Holt flinched at your officer.
Shaw lowered his voice. "Do not make declarations on an unsecured line. Secure the child, surrender the phone, and leave the garage. I will meet you upstairs."
"No."
"You are emotionally compromised."
"Preserve every access log tied to my vehicle."
Another pause.
"Why?"
Daniel ended the call.
The answer was in the question.
He returned to the SUV recorder and opened the trip history.
The vehicle had left its federal lot at 9:47 p.m., before Daniel entered it. An off-duty technician appeared on the manifest. The route stopped at the courthouse, then the South Records Annex three blocks away.
Daniel had never authorized it.
The front passenger door had opened at 11:14 p.m.
The rear passenger door had opened at 11:16.
Then the cabin microphone had recorded a woman's voice.
Lucia.
"Darren, Mateo is upstairs. Let me call him."
Holt's voice answered.
"You should have thought about him before you copied sealed files."
A second man spoke from the front seat.
"Move. Director Shaw wants this quiet before Ruiz comes down."
The audio ended when the vehicle's power was cut.
Mateo stared at the waveform on Daniel's tablet.
"That's Mom."
Daniel had heard Lucia angry, tired, laughing, and once so disappointed she could barely speak.
He had never heard that controlled fear.
Holt stepped backward.
Tessa Monroe moved between him and the elevator.
"Officer," she said, "place your access card on the hood."
"You don't have authority."
"Judge Cole does. She is on her way down."
Holt's eyes went to Daniel.
"You have no idea what she took."
"Tell me."
"Ask your wife why twenty-three protected witnesses were moved under your signature."
Daniel understood the accusation.
Six months earlier, after a witness location leaked, Daniel had approved an emergency transfer protocol. It allowed Shaw to move witnesses first and correct the paperwork later. Daniel had signed the authority after reading a summary instead of the full procedure.
Lucia had warned him that delayed paperwork was not protection.
It was a place where names could disappear.
He had told her she did not understand operational work.
Now twenty-three transfers carried his signature.
"Where is she?" Mateo asked Holt.
The officer looked at him and found the cruelty to smile.
"Maybe she finally realized what kind of man your father is."
Daniel crossed no line.
He did not touch Holt.
He simply turned the tablet so everyone could see the route ending beneath the South Records Annex.
"The black SUV moved her," Daniel said. "Your badge opened the service gate. Shaw's voice is on my line. And this recording now exists outside the building."
Holt's smile failed.
Judge Cole arrived with two deputy marshals and ordered him detained for questioning. No handcuffs were shown to Mateo. Tessa led Holt toward the elevator while Daniel remained beside his son.
It should have felt like progress.
Instead, the garage seemed colder.
Because the route history contained one more entry.
At 11:31 p.m., the SUV left the South Annex and returned empty.
Lucia had not come back with it.
Then Mateo opened the last scheduled message on his phone.
Lucia's voice whispered through static.
"If Daniel finds the car, tell him the second list is not in the courthouse. It is inside the system he built. And tell him this: I asked him to look three times."
Mateo stopped the message.
He did not accuse his father.
That was worse.
Daniel looked at the black SUV, at his name in the fleet history, and at the son who had been instructed to trust the one piece of Daniel's power capable of recording him honestly.
Lucia had not disappeared because she failed to warn him.
May you like
She had disappeared after Daniel decided her warnings were too inconvenient to believe.
